I am wanting to use my old drive from my desktop as a external drive, on a new computer.. What do I need?
I have heard there is a case to use, how do I know this hard drive is one i can use with a new computer. This one is a maxtor diamond, buffer 8mb, speed 7200.
The trick is to get an external drive enclosure that matches the type of drive. For example some drives might be SATA and others PATA/IDE. Next, make sure the external enclosure keeps the drive COOL one way or another. Some had aluminum skins to sync away the heat and others have (often noisy) fans. Next, choose an output port that matches what your other system can accept. USB (2.0) is good, SATA is better. Plan to get an enclosure that's self-powered, not powered off the USB for a drive that size.
