Plug External Hard drive into DVD recorder and record on it.?

Is it possible to plug an external hard drive into a recordering DVD player and recorded tv on to the Hard drive.

Also My dvd player doesnt have a USB drive, is it possible to get some sort of cord that will change the UBS so it will go into my DVD player? My dvd player has RCA jacks

Well, you are mixing apples and oranges. SOME digital video recorders (DVR) from Dish Network CAN use a USB hard disk in addition to the internal hard disk they already. You have to call a Dish Network, pay a fee and they will "activate" the DVR unit you have to access an external USB hard disk. A regular DVD recorder simply does not have the ability to use USB. There is NO USB connection so there is no converter.or adapter. Those RCA jacks on the DVD recorder are video and audio, inputs and outputs. They use a standard signal called LINE input or LINE output. The video might also be referred to as COMPOSITE video. Compared to USB, this is where the apples and oranges come into play. USB is a communications link, which works in a similar manner to a modem on a telephone line. Video and Audio are just that, raw analog signals. The other person who said it works in theory is WRONG. OK, that said, what you CAN do is buy a separate multimedia recorder. I have one made by Sandisk which uses SD memory cards instead of a hard disk, which cost me a whole $25 on Ebay. The expensive part was the SDHC memory cards. A year ago when I bought it, I paid $40 for 4gb. 4gb today can be found on sale for $10 on Ebay. I've seen SD cards as large as 32gb. Depending on what quality I select, I can record an hour (highest quality) to about 4 hours (lowest quality) on the 4gb cards that I have. There is no TV tuner. There is no built in display. You have to provide the video and audio from somewhere else and have a monitor to play back anything reciorded. It is strictly a manual device in that you push the button to start recording and push the button to stop. The only automatic thing it does is stop when the memory is full. But, it WILL run off a battery and if I had a battery powered video camera, I could take it anywhere. The whole thing is slightly smaller than an average paperback book. Multimedia recorders come in several styles, some of which have an internal hard disk and I think I remember seeing one recently which had a "socket" where you could plug in a SATA hard disk directly. I have not seen any which can use a USB drive. I have a TIVO, an older 2nd generation model which has USB ports. However, they are used for a wireless network adapter instead of a hardwired phone line, and to update the firmware from a USB flash drive. In theory the TIVO USB port could be used if the devices were programmed to do so. I think the 3rd generation TIVO actually can use an external USB drive, but like the Dish Network devices, you have to pay the bucks to get the feature activated.

Bottom line: the answer is NO. You can not use an external USB hard disk unless your DVD recorder is specifically designed to do so, such as the Dish Network DVR devices I've seen.
