I try to cut a quicktime file on an external drive end. All goes well till the last minute. Say something like "can not read." The hard disk is not formatted to a Mac .. just a pc .. Could this be the problem?

It's possible. What is the drive format? FAT32 has a 4GB limit on each data transfer. NTFS? A Mac can not write in a format, but which can be read to him. If there is nothing critical in this format disk as HFS + for use with a Mac, everything is erased when you format. I do not know about Final Cut, iMovie has problems but external drives are not formatted as HFS +.
